Councilmember Fred Puza, also serving as Director of Community Relations at Loyola Marymount University (LMU), must address the upcoming rally organized by Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP), misleadingly framed as a "Vigil for Gaza." This event distorts facts and denies violent incidents, promoting a one-sided narrative that neglects the suffering of all parties involved.
As a representative of our community, Puza has a responsibility to ensure that campus events foster dialogue, not extremism or hate. Failing to address this risks allowing LMU to become a platform for dangerous misinformation. Leaders are expected to uphold peace, integrity, and truth.
SJP has previously justified violent acts by Hamas, including the October 7th attacks, raising serious concerns. Marking these acts with a celebration of Palestinian resistance is deeply troubling, particularly at a respected university like LMU. Such events risk inflaming tensions and trivializing the pain associated with violence. Councilmember Puza must prevent the university from becoming a stage for harmful narratives that undermine genuine peace efforts.
Puza’s involvement in allowing this event without confronting the misinformation is a disservice to the values of peace and coexistence. Leaders must promote truth, balanced discourse, and reject extremism.
Voters and residents should monitor how our leaders respond to such divisive events. We deserve representatives who stand for integrity, truth, and the safety of all community members.
